The Ipod and Jesus

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

I just found this fun article over at The Register about what Jesus would have on his iPod.

I find it slightly worrying that the majority of people who took part in this and gave a positive answer believed Jesus would listen to Christian Rock.

I do not wish to generalise, but in this case I will. I dislike Christian Rock. I think it is the most mediocre and uninspiring of all musical genres and it can only be redeemed through sudden and permanent rapture.

If I were Jesus I would actually put on some life-affirming tracks, like “What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong or Johnny Cash’s version of ‘Hurt’.

Y’know something with a little substance and not with the usual vague, ambigious and often bloody cryptic lyrics of the contemporary God-Rock Bands

Oh praise be to the Rock
And forth we shall rock
Unto the valley
We fall and bawl
And haul crosses
Across golden fields

Another Damn Song About Crosses by Rock-4-God

Now God the Father is another matter entirely. I get the impression He’d be into a bit of Metallica, Frank Zappa and Motorhead. Something with a little bit more testostrone.

The Hero Cat

Thursday, January 5th, 2006

This has to be the best story of 2006 so far.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Police aren’t sure how else to explain it. But when an officer walked into an apartment Thursday night to answer a 911 call, an orange-and-tan striped cat was lying by a telephone on the living room floor.

The cat’s owner, Gary Rosheisen, was on the ground near his bed having fallen out of his wheelchair.

Rosheisen said his cat, Tommy, must have hit the right buttons to call 911.

“I know it sounds kind of weird,” Officer Patrick Daugherty said, unsuccessfully searching for some other explanation.

Is That All There Is To Love?

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

It is quite rare for a song to effect me in such a significant way that it actually forces me to look within and assess what I truly believe in. Perhaps this is because I listen to a lot of New Age nonsense…

Anyhow, one such song that has effected in this way is “Is That All There Is” performed by Peggy Lee and written by Leiber and Stoller. It seems to have an almost unlimited universal appeal in its scope. I love how it starts off dealing with the mundane i.e. a little girl at a circus.

As the song progresses it covers more difficult territory with the illustration of the writers disillusionment with love, and at the very end, with life itself.

The lyrics are included below for your browsing pleasure.

Google Earth Pretty Much Rocks

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

Over the past month I have gradually become more and more infatuated with Google’s new 3d map application “Google Earth“.

What’s so good about it I hear you murmur? Well you can zoom in on any number of cities and see aerial shots of the area. Wanna see the Great Pyramid from several thousand feet in the air? With Google Earth it’s pretty much a doddle.
